    ATLAS Jet Energy Scale

Jets originating from the fragmentation of quarks and gluons are the most common, and complicated, final state objects produced at hadron colliders. A precise knowledge of their energy calibration is therefore of great importance at experiments at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, while is very difficult to ascertain. We present in-situ techniques and results for the jet energy scale at ATLAS using recent collision data. ATLAS has demonstrated an understanding of the necessary jet energy corrections to within \approx 4% in the central region of the calorimeter.Comment: Proceedings from XXXI Physics in Collisio

Motives of Socially Responsible Business Conduct

The social and ecological challenges that governments face have raised their interest in socially responsible business conduct (SRBC). In this article we analyze the motives of executives to perform SRBC. We distinguish three types of motives: financial, ethical and altruistic motives. We test the hypotheses on a sample of 473 executives. The estimation results show that SRBC is driven by a combination of intrinsic and extrinsic motives, but that the intrinsic motives are stronger than the extrinsic motive.intrinsic motivation;extrinsic motivation;corporate social responsibility;socially responsible business conduct

Anecic earthworms and associated ecosystem services in a ley-arable crop

Validation of the Depression List (DL) and the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-30) in Nursing Home residents in somatic units and dementia special-care units

Dualities between Poisson brackets and antibrackets

    Get PDF
Recently it has been shown that antibrackets may be expressed in terms of Poisson brackets and vice versa for commuting functions in the original bracket. Here we also introduce generalized brackets involving higher antibrackets or higher Poisson brackets where the latter are of a new type. We give generating functions for these brackets for functions in arbitrary involutions in the original bracket. We also give master equations for generalized Maurer-Cartan equations. The presentation is completely symmetric with respect to Poisson brackets and antibrackets.Comment: 24 pages,Latexfile, corrected (2.7-8) and removed text between (2.9) and (2.10

Scaling up antiretroviral therapy in Malawi-implications for managing other chronic diseases in resource-limited countries.

    Get PDF
The national scale-up of antiretroviral therapy (ART) in Malawi is based on the public health approach, with principles and practices borrowed from the successful DOTS (directly observed treatment, short course) tuberculosis control framework. The key principles include political commitment, free care, and standardized systems for case finding, treatment, recording and reporting, and drug procurement. Scale-up of ART started in June 2004, and by December 2008, 223,437 patients were registered for treatment within a health system that is severely underresourced. The Malawi model for delivering lifelong ART can be adapted and used for managing patients with chronic noncommunicable diseases, the burden of which is already high and continues to grow in low-income and middle-income countries. This article discusses how the principles behind the successful Malawi model of ART delivery can be applied to the management of other chronic diseases in resource-limited settings and how this paradigm can be used for health systems strengthening

Do Killing-Yano tensors form a Lie Algebra?

    Get PDF
Killing-Yano tensors are natural generalizations of Killing vectors. We investigate whether Killing-Yano tensors form a graded Lie algebra with respect to the Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket. We find that this proposition does not hold in general, but that it does hold for constant curvature spacetimes. We also show that Minkowski and (anti)-deSitter spacetimes have the maximal number of Killing-Yano tensors of each rank and that the algebras of these tensors under the SN bracket are relatively simple extensions of the Poincare and (A)dS symmetry algebras.Comment: 17 page
